AISLIN.
The library was quiet and smelled of old leather bound books. Mercy, the librarian, sat behind her desk, hunched over a book with a small desk light on beside her. The soft glow highlighted the middle-aged witchâs square spectacles, accentuating her big brown eyes. Other than her, there was only one other person besides me browsing the shelves. Most of the students had better things to do with their evenings.
After the week Iâd had, I was looking forward to a night free from everything. No studies. No training. No demons. It seemed like months since I had a moment to curl up with a romance novel, or binge an entire season of the Real Housewives. I was craving a me night, which was going to include a long bubble bath, a face mask, a mug of hot cocoa, and a book that had nothing to do with supernaturals.
A western might be nice... with a sexy cowboy.
My brows drew together as Beauâs face formed in my mind, the sharp angles of his jaw, the charming curve of his mouth, the sparkle of his unusual eyes. A flush stole over my cheeks as the picture somehow morphed into me kissing those lips.
What was happening to me?
Suddenly, I was sixteen again and unable to control my own hormones. My body was taking over, and it only had one thing on its mind.
Shaking my head, I forced the images out and continued to skim over the bookshelves. Geez. For one hour I didnât want to think about the shifter, his confusing behavior, or the crazy way my body came alive when he was near. It was like every nerve ending in me was pumped with electricity. But as I tapped my finger on the spine of a paperback, I considered the other alternative.
Perhaps I should do the opposite and seek him out. Someone needed to take the bull by the horns, and clearly, it wasnât going to be Beau. Iâd never met a guy who was so hot and cold before in my life. One minute he flirted with me, the next he ran away as fast as he could from me.
I didnât have time for games or playing hard to get. Normally, if I wanted something, I went after it, and I realized as I scanned the row of romance titles that what I really wanted tonight, I wouldnât find between the pages of a book.
So what kept me from finding the cowboy?
Rejection. Nothing stung more than being shot down by a guy you were drooling over, but what was life without risk? I silently groaned, weighing my options. Bubble bath? Or cowboy?
Before I comprehended my choice, I weaved through the library, making my way around the couches toward the exitâthe book I had come in search of completely forgotten. Why read a steamy romance when you could live one?
I just had to give the shifter a nudge. Give him a taste of the fun we could have. If he had commitment issues, fine.
